Troop 230
Eagle River,  Alaska

moose.gif (18700 bytes)  Alaska, a name derived from the early Aleut word "Alaxshaq."  Called the GREAT LAND, Alaska is the largest state in the union, with more than 586,000 square miles!  Truly, it's our  last frontier!  Wow!   Within its borders are the highest mountains in North America, the longest rivers, and the most unpopulated terrain.  If you split our state into two parts, Texas would become the third largest state in the nation.

Many Alaskans get around by airplane, and there are more private aircraft than you would believe!  Aviation merit badge is very popular here, and many Alaskans have been flying as long as they can remember.   There are real roads, and yes, we have stores and restaurants and neighborhoods like everywhere else.  We don't live in igloos.  But, roads don't go everywhere we want to go, and many towns and villages don't have a highway system.  In fact, you can't even drive to our state capital, Juneau, from the lower 48, although you can get your car there on the state ferry system.

Alaska has BIG fish (really), BIG mountains (really), and LOTS of airplanes (really).

Cub Scout Robert D. hoists a King Salmon--June 2000Climbing merit badge, anyone? Our SM leads a formation flight...

In our troop, we explore this "real" Alaska--the Alaska of the last frontier.  With a pack on your back or a canoe under you there are places to go that are seemingly untouched by human hand.  There is a trailhead into the heart of the Chugach National Forest 10 minutes from where we meet.   It is the Alaska of dreams, and we live the dream.......
