PHILMONT 2009 TREK]:
We are going to Philmont in the summer of 2009!  YEAH!    For many scouts, they say that their trip to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico was the towering event of their entire scouting experience.  If you still want a chance to get in on this expedition, then act fast, download an application, and get it submitted ASAP.   There are a total of 24 slots for the entire council, and many of them have been taken already by those that signed up at the organizational meeting.    But, if you want to go, get your name in the pot and there is a good chance you will!    The 2009 Trek will depart Anchorage on July 19th, 2009, and return home on August 5th.    To go, scouts must have a full uniform and be at least 14 years old not later than July 23, 2009--no exceptions.   Here are some links related to this upcoming adventure:

BIRD CREEK CAMPOUT WAS A BLAST!:
We had an awesome campout, and 38 scouts from the troop climbed all the way to the summit! WOW!  That's definitly a troop record, and it may be an Alaskan record as well.    It was a great campout, with perfect weather, and we had a lot of fun and got a lot of stuff accomplished.   The pictures will be posted soon, so check back soon.

NEW SCOUTS HAVE JOINED T230:
Several WEBELOS scouts crossed over and joined T230 lately, and several other guys have also joined and we are very excited to have all of them.   We will be collecting pictures in the next few weeks, so hang on and check back.     Be sure and give these guys a big welcome, as they continue down the scouting trail as a T230 scout.   New scouts include Evan B and Kimo S (picture #1), Jarett S and Tyle G (picture #2), and Anthony H and Nathanial W (picture #3).  Brenden O, Paul N/H, and Nicholas are the next three pictures.   Still waiting for an image of Jonathan G.

SUMMER PLANS ARE EXCITING!:  We have a very dynamic summer ahead of us, with lots of expeditions, outings, and exciting adventures in store.   There are several important changes to note, beginning with the scoutmaster's decision to delete the Hawaii expedition.  Scouts who had paid a deposit for that adventure will get a full refund.    Other outings have been set in place as originally planned at last year's PLC meeting, and those events are exciting and very challenging.     Check out our calendar, and the plans coming up.    We are taking names and initial deposits for most summer trips at this time.   Details are on the calendar page, which can be viewed now by taking this link--------->TROOP CALENDAR

Eagle.gif (38717 bytes) RANK ADVANCEMENT UPDATE: BSA has slightly changed the requirements for the ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class, and those changes are effective at this time.   If your Boy Scout Handbook does not have these requirements in it, just print out the page of changes and place it in the back of your book.   You can check the changes out right now by taking this link---->NEW REQUIREMENTS
There are also some pretty cool advancement videos, and while they aren't perfect there is some good stuff to look and and review.    If you are working on Tenderfoot, Second Class, or First Class, and you want to find out some information about your requirements, you can take this link and see an official BSA video related to that specific requirement.   Think we are kidding?   Well, we're not!    Yeah.   This is way "kewl"....and here's the link---->ADVANCEMENT

NEW WEBSITE FEATURE!:  Streaming video has come to the T230 website!  Oh yes it has!    This is way cool, and you can see our most recent slideshows right now just by taking their links.    We have never been able to do this before, but if you are looking to see what Troop 230 is all about, you need to check these out now:

TROOP 230 RECEIVES HIGH HONORS FROM THE EKLUTNA DISTRICT:   At the recent awards dinner several adult leaders in our troop were singled out for their support of scouting and the hard work and dedication they have put into scouting over the past year.   We are very lucky to have these individuals in our troop, and without any question they have helped make our troop what it has become.    The following awards were received:
Kristin Cady (T230 Committee Member) - Selected for Outstanding Support Member of the year for 2007
Tom Carr (T230 outgoing Committee Chairman) - Selected for the Eklutna District Outstanding Committee Chairman for 2007
Tom Iskra (T230 Troop Treasurer) - Selected as the Eklutna District's Outstanding Committee Member of the Year for 2007
Fred Johnson (T230 Assistant Scoutmaster) - Selected for the Eklutna District Assistant SM of the Year for 2007
John Dieffenderfer (T230 Scoutmaster) - Selected as the Eklutna District's Scoutmaster of the Year for 2007

OTHER BIG TRIPS IN THE WORKS:

As always, the trips we do define the troop we are, and this year is no exception.    The details for most of these trips are outlined on our calendar page, but here are the BIG ONES we are working to do:

canoe666aa.jpg (355785 bytes)KENAI NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE CANOE TRIP [JUNE 11-JUNE 15]:  Trip cost is $180 which will cover permits, rentals, food, and fuel for drivers. A $50 deposit is due now on this trip. Limited to 24 people. This is a 50 mile expedition through the heart of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.   This trip is designed for scouts in the troop that are physically capable of picking up half the weight of a canoe, approximately 40 pounds, and carrying it for 3/4 of a mile.    Experience has shown that scouts 14 and older generally will enjoy this adventure, scouts that are 13 may enjoy it if they are physically capable and have a strong desire to go, and scouts under 13 typically find it physically too demanding.    For older scouts wanting to go on the Yukon canoe expedition, this trip will provide the experience needed and an additional benefit is that it will also provide an opportunity to earn the canoeing merit badge.

BASIC BACKPACKING ADVENTURE [June 25-29]: We are planning a basic backpacking adventure tailored for the scouts in the 11-14 age range, and they will be backpacking a portion of Crow Pass, hiking in from the visitor center and spending two nights near Heritage Falls and exploring the area, and then returning back to the Eagle River Nature Center. The cost of this adventure is $40, and will require about 7 miles of hiking in each direction, over relatively flat terrain. If we have sufficient adult support, and enough interest, we may hike this in two groups of difference experience levels and camp the first night in a different location.
