Troop 230
Eagle River,  Alaska

Spring--the melting snow, contrasting temperatures, and the ever-increasing daylight make this a great time of the year. We gain almost an hour a week in daylight, and you can really notice the difference.  Suddenly, you are leaving for school in the sunshine, and you can ski longer, snowboard harder, and play more when the days are longer and the lure of summer lies just around the corner.  We still have plenty of snow, but its time to think boldly, and to do things that the dark winters make difficult.  There are dogs to mush, pool sessions to play, and snow machines to use.  It is a GREAT time of year...

In Troop 230, we really enjoying having fun, and one thing we know makes us really happy is when we are burning gasoline.  Yeah....there is something about the roar of engines, the thrill of driving your own machine, that just is really exciting and very special.    In our troop we DO things, and one thing we do is drive snow machines, which our friends in the lower 48 tend to call "snowmobiles."  Whatever you call them, they are a blast to drive!   In 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 the scouts in Troop 230 drove snow machines, driving themselves more than a hundred miles on each of these expeditions.  We have traveled deep into the Alaskan winter wilderness, visiting remote lodges and isolated cabins and families.  One of our favorite places to visit is called Yenta Station, located well up the Yentna River.  The entire trip is always a lot of fun.  In our troop, we believe in living the adventure and that's just what we do.  Check out our photos, and come along for the ride.........

We always take a minute out and snap some photos at the confluence where the Big Susistna River and the Yentna River's converge.  Standing on top of four feet of solid ice, we pull out the Troop 230 flag, and take a minute to enjoy the awesome beauty that surrounds us.

In 2007 we had a blast!  The conditions were perfect for a first rate trip, with lots of fun, a great trail, and a superb trip in every way it can be measured.     We had perfect running machines, and we moved along at incredible speeds.  We went all the way to Skwentna, and everyone had a wonderful time.    We made it up there and back and had a blast doing so.    It made for some awesome driving, and a lot of fun too!    Oh what a weekend it was!   For those that went, it was one of the best scouting adventures you can have, the kind you look back on and that just seems to get better and better and better.   Man did we have fun!

Fun Inside Yentna Station:  The snow machine expedition's we have aren't just about driving snow machines.   There is something uniquely special about being in the Alaskan backcountry, in winter, warm and comfortable in a remote lodge and filled with the wonderful feeling of sore muscles, winding down after a day of hard riding.   At the Yentna Station, we enjoy warm hospitality, and after a hot spaghetti dinner the cards come out, followed by the Risk game and then, oh yeah, there is always the game called "CANDYBAR".   Talk about a wild time!
