SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR T-230 EAGLE SCOUTS This is FOR REAL--we have a Troop 230 scholarship and if you earn your Eagle in this troop it can be yours! The details are listed below, and this is way cool! You can apply to win the scholarship the year you earn Eagle, and if you don't win it that year you can reapply the next year, and every year, up until your sophomore year in college. While this isn't a huge scholarship, its still real money, and it can be yours if you earn your Eagle while a member of our troop. CURRENT VALUE: $250 paid in one lump sum, given to the award recipient in his sophomore year of attendance at an accredited institution of his choosing. Non-accredited institutions and trade schools generally are not acceptable, but exceptions might be made if approved by the troop's scholarship committee. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage our Eagle Scouts to attend a college or university and to become full time students and ultimately earn their degree. LIMITS ON USE: No limit on use of money; the award recipient is allowed to use his scholarship toward college expenses at his own discretion. NUMBER OF AWARDS: Any single scout is allowed to receive only one scholarship from the troop. One scholarship will be awarded from the troop's scholarship account annually as long as sufficient funds are available to do so. APPLICATION PROCESS: Eagles, this
is not difficult!!!! In fact, application is pretty
simple. To apply, you must meet four simple criteria: B--You must not have reached your 22 birthday C--You must have a current GPA of 3.0 or higher. D--You must be a full time student, either in high school or college If you meet the four criteria, and intend to go to college to earn a degree and think you can maintain a 3.0 average through your freshman year, then you are eligible to apply. Here is all you have to do: 1. Write a two-to-three page
letter or essay explaining your hopes and ambitions for college and your future.
Tell
how Scouting has helped you to form goals, incorporate the
value of the Scout Law and Oath, and give us your
thoughts on how you intend to "give back to Scouting" in the future.
This letter can be mailed to the Scoutmaster or handed to him, as long as you do
it prior to December 31 of the year you are applying.
You can send it to this address: 2. Add this statement to the bottom of your essay or letter, and sign it: "I certify that I have written these words on my own, without outside help or influence, and they represent my true thoughts and are a reflection of my own work. Signed:_______________________________." Applications submitted without the signed statement will not be approved. 3. Include your current transcripts. If you are still in high school, then send your current transcript from high school. If you are in college now, send a copy of your current transcript from both high school and college. You will WIN the scholarship primarily based on what you write, and you can win this while still in high school. If you win, to be awarded the money you have to actually go to college, get through your Freshman year, and maintain at least a 3.0 academic average while in college. If you can do that, you will be given a check at the beginning of your Sophomore year. To clarify this, here is an example. A scout earns Eagle at fifteen in T230, and applies for the scholarship that same year. At the time of his application, he is maintaining a 3.0 GPA. He wins the scholarship, but his grades later drop to a 2.0 average, and stay there through his senior year. He heads off to college, and maintains a 3.0 GPA his freshman year. When he enrolls for his sophomore year, and shows he is still a full time student, then he would receive a check from T230. He won the scholarship at 15, and received the money as a sophomore in college when he maintained a 3.0 average. HOW IS THE DECISION MADE: In early January of each year, we take all of the submissions from the Troop's Eagle Scouts who bothered to apply and if we have more than one then the Troop Committee will appoint a Scholarship Committee of not less than three members, who will review the applications and transcripts and render a decision. If only one eligible Eagle Scout applies, then he will "win" the scholarship for that year. If you earn Eagle in high school, you can apply the year you earned it, and again each and every year until you win it or no longer meet the four criteria. Just remember, as soon as you earn Eagle, you can apply for the scholarship. If you don't make it, you can apply again the following year as long as you still meet the four criteria. The actual scholarship money will not be paid until the Scout is a college sophomore and can show he completed his Freshman year with a 3.0 GPA. IF I WIN THE SCHOLARSHIP, IS THERE A TIME LIMIT TO USE IT? Yes. You must be enrolled in college as a full time student and have completed your Freshman year prior to reaching the age of 23. The intent is to encourage the Eagle Scout to get on with his education, to enroll in college and to get moving toward a degree. If you do not use the scholarship by the time you are 23, then you lose it. WHERE DID THE MONEY COME FROM? The original scholarship money was set aside by an anonymous donor. Parents, T-230 Boy Scouts, and friends of T-230 are encouraged to donate to this scholarship fund at any time. The account is held in the First National Bank of Alaska, Eagle River Branch. The Scoutmaster, troop treasurer, and committee member Bev Kirk have the account number and information. Checks made out to "Boy Scouts of America, Troop 230 - Scholarship Fund" may be deposited directly at the bank. There is currently enough money deposited for six scholarships. Let's help it grow! |
